Pawlak Remains in the Pro Championship Points Lead
Long Beach, Calif. – June 2, 2012 – Formula DRIFT returned to Round 3: Invasion at Palm Beach International Raceway for the second consecutive year. Rookie Daigo Saito in the Achilles Tire / Bridges Racing Lexus SC430 takes the victory and closes in on the points leader Justin Pawlak in the Falken Tire Ford Mustang.
Round 3: Invasion saw an increase in attendance in the second year of competition at Palm Beach International Raceway. The Driftstream saw over 200,000 viewers in a 24 hour period.
“We’re happy to be able to run the original track configuration due to the improvements by Palm Beach International Raceway which made for an improved event for the fans,” said Jim Liaw, president and co-founder of Formula DRIFT. “Additional grandstands were brought in to accommodate for the increase in fan attendance. The dedication and investment by the venue shows their support for our Series and look forward to returning next season.”
Points leader and winner of last year’s Palm Beach event, Justin Pawlak and the 2011 Formula DRIFT Champion, Daijiro Yoshihara in the Discount Tire / Falken Tire Nissan 240SX faced off in a battle for third place. Yoshihara took the win after Pawlak spun out on his chase run and moves into third place overall. The final match of evening pitted Chris Forsberg in the NOS Energy / Hankook Tire Nissan 370Z against Formula DRIFT rookie Daigo Saito. After a close battle Saito was crowned the winner and has now found the podium for the third consecutive event and increases his chances to win the coveted rookie of the year honors.
“This is the first time being in Formula DRIFT and I was able to take the victory and am extremely happy about that,” said Daigo Saito, winner of Round 3: Invasion. “I want to thank everyone and my sponsor Achilles Tire. All my runs weren’t perfect, but I am happy with the final outcome.”

Red Bull Air Race – New York Tickets
May 2nd, 2010 by Elusive Media
NEW YORK – April 30, 2010 – The metro area better fasten their seat belts because tickets are now on sale for the 2010 Red Bull Air Race New York being held in Liberty State Park in Jersey City this summer. In partnership with NYC & Company, Jersey City, NJ and Liberty State Park, the race will take place over the Hudson River on June 19 and 20.
With some luck, the sun will be shining as thousands of spectators look just feet above the river to see something other than tall buildings. In the Red Bull Air Race, fifteen of the world’s best pilots race individually against the clock for the fastest time through an aerial race track made up of inflatable air gates. This year marks the sixth year of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship which will also land in countries including Canada, Germany, Hungary and Portugal.
Tickets are available in different levels on www.redbullairrace.com. For General Admission tickets, standing room tickets start at $30 and Grandstand Reserved Seating start at $50. The Race Club provides hospitality, premium viewing, jumbotron screens, selection of food and beverages in a buffet form and a “party” atmosphere. Price for a 2-day pass will be $540.
Corporate groups can book a private lounge within the Business Race Club: requests will personally be managed by the Red Bull Air Race Hospitality Team under hospitality@redbullairrace.com. The High Flyers Lounge is the most premium level of hospitality at the Red Bull Air Race and includes the best views of the track and gourmet food and beverage. A service fee and the Liberty State Park fee will be applied to each ticket level. Questions and requests can be directed to ticketing@redbullairrace.com.
So gather the family and tell your friends about your plans to attend Red Bull Air Race New York at Liberty State Park in Jersey City this summer. Unfortunately, the race will not be viewable from lower Manhattan. The Red Bull Air Race encourages everyone to buy tickets and plan transportation via ferries from Battery Park or the Light Rail in New Jersey. There will not be general admission spectator parking in Liberty State Park.
“Staging a Red Bull Air Race in New York City and Jersey City marks an important milestone in the history of the global motorsport championship and we feel privileged to be given this opportunity,” said Bernd Loidl, CEO of the Red Bull Air Race. “We look forward to our partnership with both cities and Liberty State Park by providing spectators with an incredible experience as well as enabling millions of television viewers around the globe to watch the best race pilots compete against the spectacular skyline of some of the world’s great cities.”
Over the past five years, the Red Bull Air Race has held races in major metropolitans such as London, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, and in the U.S. in San Diego, Detroit, San Francisco, and Monument Valley, Utah. Of the fifteen race pilots from around the world, two are Americans, Kirby Chambliss from Arizona and Michael Goulian from Massachusetts. Each pilot operates a year-round race team including a technician and team coordinator. The end goal for each race team is to accumulate as many points throughout the season in a quest to achieve the prestigious honor of 2010 Red Bull Air Race World Champion.

Chevy Volt to get 230 mpg rating
August 11th, 2009 by Elusive Media
DETROIT (CNNMoney.com) — The Chevrolet Volt, GM’s electric car that’s expected to go on sale in late 2010, is projected to get an estimated 230 miles per gallon, the automaker announced Tuesday.
That exceptionally high government mileage rating could give the Volt a major boost. For the first time, car buyers will easily be able to compare electric cars with ordinary gas-powered cars.
“Having a car that gets triple-digit fuel economy can and will be a game changer for us,” said GM CEO Fritz Henderson.
Determining fuel economy for an electric car is a tricky matter, and General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) has been working with the Environmental Protection Agency for years on the issue.
Basically, you will be able to drive the Volt for about 40 miles using the lithium-ion batteries. For those driving less than that, gas mileage is essentially unlimited. It is only after 40 miles that the Volt will start using gas.
“Most Volt drivers will operate on a daily basis without having to use a single drop of gas,” said Henderson, saying that three out of four drivers travel 40 miles or less a day.
Fuel economy for hybrid vehicles like the Toyota Prius is displayed in the same way as it is for any other gasoline-powered vehicle. It gets 46 mpg, for example, versus 19 mpg for a V-6 Ford Mustang.
That standard works because all the energy used by the Prius ultimately comes from burning gasoline. The Prius just uses that energy more efficiently than other cars do.
The Chevrolet Volt, on other hand, runs on electricity that comes from two sources — a battery as well as a gasoline engine.
When gasoline is providing the power, the Volt might get as much as 50 mpg. But that mpg figure would not take into account that the car has already gone 40 miles with no gas at all.
So let’s say the car is driven 50 miles in a day. For the first 40 miles, no gas is used and during the last 10 miles, 0.2 gallons are used. That’s the equivalent of 250 miles per gallon. But, if the driver continues on to 80 miles, total fuel economy would drop to about 100 mpg. And if the driver goes 300 miles, the fuel economy would be just 62.5 mpg.
The Volt will need to be plugged in at night to recharge. The company said it estimates it will need 10 kilowatt hours for the recharge necessary to travel 40 miles. That should cost a total of about 40 cents at off-peak electricity rates in Detroit, Henderson said.
The EPA rating for the Volt is based on a draft report and applies to city driving. Henderson said GM is confident that when Volt’s combined city/highway mileage average is calculated, it will be over 100 mpg.
But GM is obviously focused on the 230 mpg estimate as part of its early marketing campaign for the vehicle. It unveiled a logo with the number 230, with the zero looking like a cross between a smiley face and electrical plug.
GM started pre-production of the car in June is making about 10 a month. “Volt is becoming very real, very fast,” Henderson said.
Henderson conceded the cost of building a Volt will be expensive, about $40,000 per vehicle. But he said the vehicle will qualify for a $7,500 tax credit, which will reduce the vehicle cost by that amount for consumers.
He also stressed that GM has not set the pricing for the Volt, and conceded the company may have to subsidize the vehicle. The goal: Make enough sales to move the Volt from “first generation” to lower-cost future designs.
“The cost of the vehicle in the first generation is high,” he said
‘Clunkers’ Program Is Running Out of Cash
July 31st, 2009 by Elusive MediaBy Dana Hedgpeth
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, July 31, 2009; 8:22 AM
The government’s “cash for clunkers” program, aimed at boosting stagnant auto sales, is almost out of money, putting its future in question, according to sources familiar with the effort.
Passed by Congress in late June to help the flagging U.S. auto industry and launched just a week ago, the $1 billion program gives vouchers worth up to $4,500 to consumers who trade in gas-guzzling cars for more fuel-efficient models. The highly publicized effort was scheduled to run until Nov. 1, or until money ran out. It was not expected to run out of cash so quickly.
The effort, formally known as the Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS, appeared headed for a temporary shutdown at midnight Thursday. Federal transportation officials became increasingly concerned that the program’s popularity with consumers could drain its budget by week’s end, according to sources familiar with the discussions who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Shortly after midnight Thursday, several local dealers said in interviews that they would wait to see how the government was going to proceed with the program before they accepted any more clunkers. Dealers had been expecting an overwhelming response to the program to continue through the weekend.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood called lawmakers Thursday afternoon to warn them the program would be halted at midnight, according to congressional sources. Several other sources in the administration and on Capitol Hill also said the effort faced a midnight suspension.
But later, administration officials said that no such suspension was planned and that all valid transactions under the program would be honored. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said in a statement that the administration is “evaluating all options” to keep the program funded.
“We are working tonight to assess the situation facing what is obviously an incredibly popular program,” the statement said. “Auto dealers and consumers should have confidence that all valid CARS transactions that have taken place to-date will be honored.”
Lawmakers from Michigan held a conference call Thursday night to discuss the matter and were scheduled to have another joint call at 9 a.m. Friday. They were preparing to speak with Obama administration officials about obtaining more funding, staffers said, and were committed to finding a way to extend the program.
“We’re going to try to figure out what’s a realistic amount of money and get it into the program,” said Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.).
The official Web site for the program, Cars.gov, said last night that $779 million remained in its coffers. Transportation Department officials said last night they were working with the White House and congressional leaders to find ways to sustain the program.
Auto dealers said they’ve had an overwhelming response from consumers wanting to turn in their clunkers. Under the program, consumers get a voucher for up to $4,500 — depending on the model and average fuel economy of their car or truck — if they buy a new car or truck that gets better gas mileage than the one that was scrapped. The payoff grows depending on the difference in the fuel efficiencies of the old and new cars.
“Clearly, this has been a very stimulative program that’s got consumers back into the car market. It’s our hope that possibly more funds can be made available,” said Cody Lusk, president of the American International Automobile Dealers Association.
Lusk said the group has fielded hundreds of calls from frustrated dealers who have had problems entering vehicle data into the program’s Web site. He said frequent crashes of the site have made it harder for car sellers to complete deals.
Jack Fitzgerald, who owns several dealerships in the Washington region, said his stores have already taken in about 200 clunkers. He said the government hyped the program too much before setting clear rules and guidelines on it. He suggested that the government consider lowering the dollar amount of the vouchers and extending the program for more time.
Tammy Darvish, another major auto dealer in the Washington area, said her more than two dozen dealerships have had lots of interest in the program but its success has left dealers strapped for money as they wait for payments from the government.
Under the program, dealers credit the amount of the voucher to customers who buy new cars. They then get reimbursed by the government.
“There’s a whole lot of money out there that dealers haven’t collected on,” said Darvish, who noted that she’s taken in about 200 clunkers. “We’ve sold the cars and we’ve processed the paperwork, but we haven’t been reimbursed. I’m out about $1 million. The government is supposed to reimburse me for that.”
Darvish said she expects that even more customers will come in over the weekend to trade in their cars.
Staff writers Ben Pershing, Sholnn Freeman, Paul Kane and Scott Wilson contributed to this report.
